The British Council for Chinese Martial Arts held its annual U.K National Championships on Sunday 7th September at Bletchley Leisure Centre, Bletchley near Milton Keynes. This competition was open to all members of the BCCMA over 18 years of age, as the junior members had their competition back in May. All the competitors arrived between 9.00-10.00am for registration and weigh in. Many different styles and clubs were represented which is always a healthy indication of the popularity of chinese martial arts. By 10.30am the event started with an opening Lion Dance by Nam Yang Pugilistic Association. The troupe was made up of children who gave a very good display of traditional Chinese Lion Dancing. This was a lively and enthusiastic start to what would be an action packed day of Chinese martial Arts.

The hall was split into four sections, which included two for Open hand forms and weapons, one for Qingda sparring, and one for Pushing hands. Spectators were spoilt for choice as all areas proved very competitive with outstanding displays of skill and art. The weapons categories were a joy to watch. To many people outside the traditional Chinese Arts a lot of the weapons used in the competition are only ever seen in a few films. Spectators watched in ore as competitors displayed their skills with these weapons and finished to an eruption of applause and cheers

Our squad consisted of 19 competitors plus several more members acting as officials for the Qingda section. Shaun Gaines and two of his students had also travelled down from Alnwick, in Northumberland to take part and represent the association. The day started with for Sil Lum Kune with various members taking part in the forms and weapons sections while the ladies started the Qingda. As usual the sparring sections proved our clubs most successful events with medals coming in from the start. Out of the 19 squad members, 13 won medals for sparring even though it was their first competition for the majority.
