During his school days Kian was involved in football and basketball. Out of school Kian pursued other sports such as outdoor pursuit courses at the AT7 centre and here he also had the opportunity to train with the Coventry Crusaders basketball team. For many years Kian was always interested in boxing but was never allowed to join a club so instead started Shotokan Karate in the year 2000. At the start he enjoyed Karate, slowly climbing up the grades and by 2005, he had reached brown double red belt (one away from black). However just before going for his black belt grading, the prices rose and by now he had lost interest in Karate, so he stopped.

In 2007 Kian started to train in Siu Lum Hak Fu Mun Kung Fu under Sifu Paul Burkinshaw. It wasn’t long before Kian was training almost every day in Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Grappling and Wrestling within Siu Lum Kune. In the latter part of 2008, he also started to train with Aaron Marsh as well, who was one of Sifu Paul Burkinshaw’s old students, and was running a fitness and fighting class at the academy. Kian also took advantage of the monthly training days, sparring days and weapon seminars to help aid him progress and his desire to learn and improve. He took part in several courses gaining qualifications as a first aider at work, BCCMA level 2 Coaching and a BCCMA Qingda judge.

During 2013, he opened up some new classes in the village of Burton Green on the outskirts of Coventry. In 2016, Kian moved back to Coventry, it became more
difficult to maintain the dedication to Siu Lum Kune due to other commitments. He therefore started his own kickboxing club, calling it Total Kickboxing Academy while still maintaining a presence at Siu Lum Kune at sparing days and supporting at competitions.

Total kickboxing grew and become successful with adults, women only, junior classes and personal training sessions. Kian was running his new club out of toe2toe gym in Coventry. Here he was able to widen his knowledge and experience training alongside the talented coach’s and boxers there.

In late 2022, Kian decided to close this club due to family commitments, and returned back to Siu Lum Kune where he could resume his own training. Initially this was on the Tuesday evening open-mat sparring class but was soon attending the other classes as well. Kian was also involved with Sifu Paul and Callum Burkinshaw in reorganising the club’s syllabus in the summer of 2023
