Brief History of Arshaan Singh Kalcutt

From a child Arshaan had always had an interest with martial arts and was heavily influenced by Bruce Lee and other martial arts movie-stars such as Jet li, Donnie Yen, Jean-Claude Van Damme and many more. In April 2012, Arshaan decided to try Kung fu and after his first lesson instantly made a committed decision to continue and has never looked back since. He began training under the mentorship of Sifu Paul Burkinshaw and many of the other Siu Lum Hak Fu Mun instructors.

As Arshaan began to climb the ranks, he decided to start weapons and kickboxing training to upgrade his arsenal alongside his kung fu, and what started off as a 2-day a week hobby soon turned into a 6-7 day a week obsession. He then competed in the WKU English National tournaments for continuous sparring winning several 1st and 2nd place championships. Unfortunately, whilst practicing for a tournament Arshaan suffered from a knee injury which reduced his ability to train at high contact and intensity. However, he wasn’t easily beaten, rather than quitting like the doctors suggested, he began to use martial arts as a part of his recovery plan and after another 3 years was ready to jump back into the deep end.

In 2018, he achieved his Black Sash in Kung Fu, and then the following year graded for his Kickboxing Black Sash in 2019. Soon after in early 2020, COVID 19 brought his training to a halt with the gym being closed however, he found creative ways to keep training and keep honing his skills. Once all restrictions were dropped and Arshaan was back training regularly, he decided he wanted to be a coach, and covered the several courses as well as gain the practical skills to achieve this during classes. Besides assisting in the classes, Arshaan took over the Saturday morning weapons and higher grades Kung Fu class. In December 2021, Arshaan achieved his 1st Degree in Hak Fu Mun.

Arshaan started his own Kickboxing class at the academy in 2022. With the help and mentorship of Sifu Callum Burkinshaw, he decided to get fight ready, and in October 2022 won a local amateur kickboxing tournament. Also in October 2022, he was awarded his 2nd Degree in Hak Fu Mun Kung Fu.

During this period, he decided to focus more on the coaching side and started preparing and taking students to competitions and supporting fighters in their corners on behalf of Siu Lum Kune. Soon afterwards in early 2023, Arshaan graded for his 1st degree Black in kickboxing.
