Association Fund Raising Event 2003
July 2003 was the second Sil Lum Kune (Shaolin Fist Chinese Boxing Association’s) fund raising competition day. The weather was dry, warm and reasonable sunny which was a bonus considering most the events were to be staged out side. The bouncy castle and gladiator game arrived about noon courtesy of Bouncealot (www.Bouncealot.co.uk - 024 76318727). They had done a fantastic deal for our club because not only were they the parents of one of the students, but because we were raising money for charity as well.
Due to late arrivals etc the event was delayed untill 1.45pm, instead of starting at 1.00pm as planned. This year 11 teams entered from the various clubs within the association.
Holbrooks (13th Scout Hut, Coventry)
Coventry (Centre AT7)
Bulkington Best (Bulkington Boys Club, Bulkington)
Bulkington Braves (Bulkington Boys Club, Bulkington)
Nuneaton (Higham Lane School, Nuneaton)
Nuneaton Ninjas (Higham Lane School, Nuneaton)
Bedworth (Exhall East Community Centre, Bedworth)
Bedworth Juganaughts (Exhall East Community Centre, Bedworth)
Exhall Hornets (Exhall East Community Centre, Bedworth)
I Ball (Exhall East Community Centre, Bedworth)
Kickboxers (Exhall East Community Centre, Bedworth)
Each team was made up of adults and children with up to four team members that could be relatives or friends of people who trained. The competition was made up of ten events each requiring an adult and child to participate, with the exception of the Tug of War, which was a team event. Each team member paid £5.00 entry fee, which then became the prize money. All entrants and supporters from each club raised sponsorship money, with the majority to go to the ECMO department at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester and the remainder for equipment within the clubs.
The first event of the day was a running race to the top of Hayes Lane and back, then followed a basket ball and then a penalty shoot out, with 5 shots. Other events included highest score with 9 darts, Hoopla with 5 hoops and a skittles game. The balance test event proved a real show of determination in the children’s category. The contestants had to balance on 4 inch square posts that stood 18 inchs high. 4 out of the 11 teams took top points because in the end we had to set a time limit or they would have still been standing today. The strength test for the adults was fun to watch. The entrants in this category held out a 6ft oak staff at arms length with top points going to the person that lasted the longest. The final event of the day was the team tug of war. This was dominated by the Kickboxers, Nuneaton and I Ball teams. But when all the points were added up the day was decided by a final tug of war between Nuneaton and I Ball teams.
This was a very close event, which was finally won by Nuneaton, giving them the £450 prize money
Many thanks to all that took part, a big thank you to all who raised sponsorship money, to John Harris, Alex Hyde, Mrs Smith and Mrs Lapworth who looked after the bouncy castle and gladiator game, the staff at Exhall East Community Centre and to Craig Newton (clown) who entertained everyone before the events started.
Another purpose to staging these sort of events is to get all the students and families together from the many clubs within the association, encouraging them to relax, mix and have fun which in turn strengthens and bonds the association closer together. Many people stated what a good day it had been and that we should have more fun days / Barbeques in the future.
From sponsorship money and donations we have raised the sum of £2137.35, plus £120 was from the bouncy castle and gladiator game. This has given us the grand total of £2257.35. As you can see from the picture below £1500 was donated to the ECMO ward at Glenfield Hospital Leicester, with the remainder being used to buy more mats and equipment for the clubs.
