Brandon Hickman's Martial Arts Journey

Brandon’s martial arts journey started when he was 5 years old with Tae Kwon Do, achieving his black belt at the age of 8 years old. His martial arts idol was Bruce Lee so he always wanted to train in Kung Fu. I started looking for a Kung Fu school once he had achieved his black belt and the Siu Lum Hak Fu Mun Academy was recommended by a work colleague whose son had trained there.

Initially Brandon was going to continue training at both Tae Kwon Do and Kung Fu but it became obvious that Brandon preferred Kung Fu due to the variation of skills he could learn which also included Weapons, Chinese wrestling/grappling and kick boxing.

During the 4 years Brandon has been training in Kung Fu he has represented the Siu Lum Hak Fu Mun Academy at the BCCMA competitions and was British Champion for Quinda sparring in 2011 and British Champion for Open Hand Forms in 2013. He has also been awarded the Best Newcomer for 2012, a Commitment and Dedication award in 2013 and Appreciation award in 2014. The Appreciation award in 2014 was for his achievement in performing the broad sword and 2 man form with his Sifu Paul Burkinshaw at the Hak Fu Mun Annual Dinner held in Hong Kong.

Brandon’s aim was always to achieve his black sash and with his hard work, dedication, focus and the support of his colleagues at the Academy and at all times remembering the principles of a good martial artist Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self Control and Indomitable Spirit he achieved his black sash on Sunday 16th August 2015.
