WKA Open British Championships
3rd May 2015, competition report:
Last Sunday on the 3rd of May several members of the Siu Lum Kune fight team from the Kickboxing and MMA squads travelled to The North Solihull Sports Centre Chelmsley Wood near Birmingham to compete in The WKA Open British Championships. We had an enjoyable and successful experience, returning home having won 6 British titles- 3 for kickboxing and 3 for mixed martial arts- as well as a silver medal for the adult mixed martial arts. Unfortunately some of us didn’t get to fight due to not having an opponent in our weight or age categories but we still all had fun cheering on those members of the squad who did.
Our first title was captured early in the morning as young 6 year old Ellis Cook form the Kickboxing squad fought twice. He managed to stop both of his opponents in the first round due to his spirited attacking combinations to win the WKA Open British junior Kickboxing title for the boys 6-7yrs, -23kgs category. It was Ellis’s first competition in which he performed extremely well and we’re very excited to see what he will accomplish in the future.
Later on in the day Simi Tahkar made his adult MMA (mixed martial arts) debut reaching the final. Simi had only once competed before which was at the same competition the previous year. Throughout the bout he scored several takedowns and dominated much of the ground action. Simi came very close to submitting his opponent with an electric chair submission but his opponent eventually managed to break free. He was well on his way to earning a judges’ decision victory to win the title before unfortunately being submitted himself to earn a second place silver medal. It was a close and action packed fight in which we are extremely proud of Simi for his effort in achieving 2nd place in the WKA Mixed Martial Arts Open British category.
Congratulations also to Rominder and Arshaan Kalcutt who both won WKA British Junior Kickboxing titles and to Toby Foxon, Daniel Ngheim and myself (Arun Wagle) who all won WKA British Cadet Mixed Martial Arts titles. Many thanks to all the coaches who helped prepare everyone for the competition. It was a very successful day for Siu Lum Kune and a day that we hope to repeat in future competitions.
