Brief History of Rominder Singh Kalcutt
When Rominder was younger, he first tried Karate in 2008. This was at the Way of the Spiritual Warrior in Coventry, but after several months realised this style was for him. Several years later he decided to try kickboxing at Siu Lum Kune in 2013, after his brother, Arshaan had joined the club the year before and had recommended it to him. Rominder wanted to gain the ability to defend himself in the ever evolving world. He enjoyed the kickboxing and was soon training four days per week. During his GCSE’s in 2016, he reduced his training to once a week. While in 6th form, he also took a year hiatus, but returned in late 2018.
Up until this point, Rominder had made good progress through the grades and decided then to knuckle down to reach his black sash. Thorough hard work and dedication, Rominder was able to achieve his black sash in September 2019.
He continued at the club until 2021 when he was accepted into the R.A.F. When he was stationed at RAF Waddington, near Lincoln, he joined the boxing club so as to keep on top of his training and learn these skills to improve on his fighting techniques.
In 2022, Rominder started to return home most weekends so as he could continue training in the kickboxing at Siu Lum Kune. During this period, he would often do one to one sessions with his good friend, Callum Burkinshaw, to aid his improvement and skills. In October 2022, Rominder decided to put his fighting skills to the test and entered a kickboxing competition in Coventry where he won both of bouts. He continues to travel back most weekends, so he is able to continue training at the club.
Rominder stated that the kickboxing had given him the skills that led him to be successful in his military life. These include discipline and confidence and the importance of being punctual, being respectful and to show control.
