Sil Lum Kune at the British Championships

The saying I can’t believe it - Well its true – did you realise how many children in your area are British Champions, not only have they had the focus and determination but they have also had the guidance and support from 2006 World Champion and six times British Champion, Sifu Paul Burkinshaw.  He entered both Junior and Senior competitors into the BCCMA British Sparring Championships in Luton on Sunday 11 September 2011.

Having had previous experience with other martial arts clubs it was such a pleasure to see how well organised and disciplined each event was.  Competitors were marked on a point system with a judging panel and side judges with a well known referee to ensure no excessive contact to therefore encourage and discipline within the art and prevent injury.

Sifu Paul Burkinshaw went out on a high 5 years ago after winning the World Championship but decided to come out of retirement for this competition.  He competed in the veteran heavy weight and won a Gold medal.  When asked why he came out of retirement he replied “I wanted to see if there was life in the old dog, and to hopefully show my students that I lead by example”

The club achieved, (11) Gold medals (12) Silver medals (3) Bronze medals.  So you never know they might live next door to you but there are now 42 National titles won by members who train at Sil Lum Kune this year alone.
