WKA Open Junior British
Kickboxing Championships
Sunday 22nd March saw eight members of Sil-Lum Kune (some from the Hark Fu Mun Kung-fu and some from the Chinese kickboxing association) attend the WKA junior British kickboxing open in Birmingham.
Among the fighters representing the club were 3 Black sash holders Charlotte Burkinshaw (15 yrs old), Cameron Burkinshaw (11 yrs old) and Callum Burkinshaw (9 yrs old) all of whom took first place in their respective categories. Also attending was Bodie Miles (8 yrs old) who holds a purple sash and managed a very respectable 2nd place in this his first ever full contact tournament. The team also took with them four 6 year olds who train in the academies little tiger program for younger students. Each of the little Tigers Thomas Harris, Marlee Warwick, Regan and Aiden Barrow fought with incredible maturity and courage and brought great credit to themselves, their parents and their club as did Jake Holder (11 yrs old) who trains within the kickboxing discipline, this was Jakes first competition of any type.
Following the event, the consensus from the clubs attendees was that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and although the level of contact was much heavier than they have been previously used to that they would certainly look forward to another one of these events.
The team put in some intensive training for the two weeks prior to the event and all thought they had benefited from it, although Bodie and Charlotte both said that they would have liked to have done more of this training.
Bodie, Charlotte, Callum and Cameron all qualified for the WKA British squad and have been invited to compete at the world championships in Spain in November this year.
