B.C.C.M.A Junior British Championships 2005
Sil Lum Kune took a squad of 70 children to the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts (BCCMA) Junior British Championships in Reading on Sunday 1st May 2005. The BCCMA is the governing body for Chinese martial arts in the UK representing over 130 associations. This competition is held every year for the younger members up to 17 years old. This year the entry age was trialled at 5 years and up. (Previous years entry age had been 7 years)
The day started at 9.00am with registration and weigh before the opening ceremony began with a parade and national anthems. After this the competition started with two areas for forms and weapons and another two for sparring.
Sil Lum Kune’s squad was made up of kids from the Kung Fu, Chinese Kickboxing and Little Ninja classes that the association is made up of.
Out of the 70 that took part 53 won medals with a total of 63 medals won in all. (21 Gold medals, 17 Silver medals and 25 Bronze medals)
The best performance of the day went to 13 year old Morissa Bradnick who won a Silver medal for Qingda sparring, a Gold medal for Traditional Southern Open-hand Forms and a Silver medal for Traditional Southern Short weapons.
The organising association for the Junior Championships has been Chen Wu Khan for many years now on behalf of the BCCMA. They have a couple of awards, which they present at the competition for outstanding effort and achievement. Due to Morissa’s hard work over the past several months and her performance on the day, Paul Burkinshaw nominated her for a special award to the BCCMA which they granted and presented her an Outstanding Achievement award at the end of the competition.
Paul Burkinshaw who is the Chief Instructor of the association commented
“ I was very pleased with every ones performance. It was a great result for the clubs and children to win so many medals after all the hard work over the last few months preparing for this competition. The best achievement though is the confidence and experience gained by all of them at major competition level. This can only benefit all the kids in the future and so hopefully they can achieve even better results next time.”
