B.C.C.M.A Junior British Championships 2003
After last year’s success at this event I had tried to organise the biggest squad ever to enter this year’s championships. After a few students dropping out at the last minute due to injuries we still managed to have a squad of 33. As the amount people travelling down both to compete and support was so large, Teresa Lloyd (one of the student’s parents) arranged a coach for the club.
We arrived in good time and all the students then registered and those sparring got weighed in. The event began with an opening ceremony, which included speeches and a parade to honour the Chinese Ambassador. We were then entertained with a fantastic Lion dance incorporating two lions.Adult members Kevin Redgrave, David Richardson, Mark Pritchards and Alan Hill took their positions around the mats as some of the Qingda officials and the sparring commenced. All who took part in the day performed with credit to themselves and the club they represented. It wasn’t too long before the results started to roll in, and our medal tally began to grow. Although this was our biggest squad yet we were still overshadowed by several of the bigger associations.
As a parent and coach I was as ever impressed by the standard and safety shown by the officials, and also by the skill of the students taking part. I have always been proud of my student’s performance, but I have to say that the proudest moment of the day was seeing my 9 year old daughter, Charlotte, taking a gold medal in the Qingda sparring. This was only her second competition and first outside our own club.
The number of entrants was up 35% on last year, so the day went on a little longer than expected. The day closed with the medal presentations and a special award was also presented to one of our students, Samantha Davies for her efforts in Martial Arts.
While travelling back home on the coach it was clear to see that the day was enjoyed by all. Students, parents, brothers, sisters etc were talking about the day and their ambitions for next year’s event. The final medal tally for our club was 10 Gold medals, 10 Silver medals and 12 Bronze medals.
