B.C.C.M.A Junior British Championships 2001
Paul Burkinshaw, who is the Chief Instructor of the Sil Lum Kune Chinese Boxing Association, entered a squad of 17 youngsters into the B.C.C.M.A Junior British Kung Fu Championships at Yateley, Hampshire on Sunday 6th May. The group ranged from 7 to 17 years old, from the local clubs in Coventry, Bedworth, and Nuneaton.
All 17 took part in the sparring sections in their corresponding categories. The sparring, called Qingda is a semi-contact version of the traditional Chinese San Shou fighting. This type of sparring not only includes the usual hand and foot techniques of normal styles, but also includes sweeps, throws, take-downs, and forcing the opposition off the mat to score as well. The event started with the youngest members on the mat first and progressed through the day towards the eldest. As the day went on, so the medal tally increased until the final haul was reached.

Sil Lum Kune - Squad And Officials
Only two members of the squad missed out on medals. It was Matthew Fitzgerald's first competition, and 10 year old Taylor Cooke just missed out on a medal, but both lads performed very well, and gained valuable experience for the future.
Adult members David Richardson, Taryn Elwell, Mark Pritchards, Kevin Redgrave, and Alan Hill helped out on the day acting as officials and judges after sitting the B.C.C.M.A National Judges course in February this year. Chief Instructor Paul Burkinshaw also helped out as one of the event's referees. This proved to be very frustrating on the day for the adult members of the club, who acted as officials and so were unable to support the juniors or cheer them on.
Paul Burkinshaw said that the group had performed well in previous years, but was over whelmed by the amazing results on Sunday. " I have been coaching the juniors with the help of my team of assistant instructors, but all credit goes to the juniors who did what was needed on the day. I believe that several of the juniors are showing real talent, and could make a name for themselves in the future. I would also like to thank the parents and supporters who traveled down to Yateley on the day to encourage and cheer the kids on."
